Bill Belichick, the architect of the Tar Heels’ program, declared that UNC is in a markedly better position in 2026 than it was during his first year at the helm. The roster now includes 60 fresh faces, many of whom have already shown marked improvement. Belichick stressed that the continuity built over the past year has allowed the squad to progress more quickly through practices and to fine‑tune strategies ahead of the upcoming season opener.
Preparing for a Historic Opening
The Tar Heels are set to face TCU in Dublin on August 29, marking the first time the program opens its season abroad. Belichick highlighted that the experience of playing in Ireland adds an extra layer of excitement and preparation, but the focus remains on executing the fundamentals that have defined the team’s recent growth.
Reflecting on last year’s challenges, Belichick noted that the previous offseason was defined by a steep learning curve — new schemes, new staff, and a roster in flux.
