The Bellarmine University men's soccer team will kick off its 2026 season at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium on Thursday, welcoming Evansville in a match that also serves as the head‑coaching debut for Matt Cannady. The game represents a symbolic handoff from a long‑standing era to a fresh direction for the program.
Tim Chastonay, who guided the Knights for 28 seasons, departs after amassing a legacy that includes two ASUN Coach of the Year awards and a consistent presence in the conference tournament. His tenure helped establish Bellarmine as a staple of the ASUN, with the team earning a tournament berth every year since transitioning to Division I.
A Program Built on Consistency
Last season the Knights captured the Gold Division title, securing the first regular‑season championship in any sport during the Division I era. Their performance exceeded preseason expectations, finishing ahead of a poll that had projected a last‑place finish. The team also advanced to the ASUN Tournament semifinals and reached the finals in two of the past three years.
Returning to the lineup are several key contributors, including redshirt senior midfielder Tate McCrery, redshirt junior defender Sam Safly, and goalkeeper Tudor Iordan, who previously led the squad to a penalty shootout victory in the conference semifinals. Johan Nissen‑Lie, the sole All‑ASUN player returning, earned co‑Player of the Year honors and was a Hermann Trophy candidate in 2025.
The roster will also feature new additions such as transfers Jack Raulston and Kanata Taira, alongside a diverse freshman class that includes goalkeepers, forwards, midfielders and defenders. This blend of experience and youthful energy aims to sustain the program’s competitive edge.
With a new coaching staff led by Cannady, the Knights enter the season focused on preserving their tradition of excellence while embracing the challenges of a reshaped roster. The opening match against Evansville offers an early gauge of how the team will adapt to its evolving identity.
