Opening Surge
Belmont University’s women’s soccer team traveled to Alabama for a season‑opening road test against Samford, entering the match with high hopes of building on a promising preseason.
The Bulldogs struck first, capitalizing on early pressure to open the scoring in the 38th minute, a goal delivered by freshman midfielder Hayven Laurendine that put Samford ahead 1‑0.
Genie’s Heroics
Between the posts, Belmont goalkeeper Greta Genie turned in a career‑high 10 saves, several of them described as showstoppers, preserving a clean sheet through the first half and keeping the Bruins within striking distance.
Her distribution was sharp, often launching quick counters that tested Samford’s back line, but the defense held firm as the half‑time whistle approached.
Second‑Half Push
After the break, Belmont’s attack sparked to life, with Kaitlyn Elliot and Ava Meadors each carving out chances from midfield. Despite a flurry of shots, the ball refused to cross the line, leaving the score unchanged.
Samford answered back in the 75th minute when Marsha Bishop seized on a defensive lapse and sprinted down the left flank before slipping a precise pass to a teammate, extending the lead to 2‑0.
The midfield battle remained fierce throughout, with both sides trading tackles and possession, but Belmont’s defensive organization limited further damage.
Looking Ahead
Belmont will return to the familiar confines of the university stadium on Thursday at 5 p.m. to host Chattanooga, a match that could serve as a litmus test for the team’s resilience after the opening loss.
