At the heart of the Bemidji Girls’ Soccer program is a simple but powerful slogan: “We don’t hope. We do.” The phrase, now emblazoned on preseason gear, serves as a daily reminder that effort, not wishful thinking, drives the team forward.
After finishing the 2025 campaign with an 11‑6‑1 record and a hard‑fought run to the Section 8AAA semifinals, the Lumberjacks are poised for a fresh start. The squad has moved into the Central Lakes Conference, a shift that promises new rivalries and a broader stage for their competitive spirit.
A New Guard Between the Posts
Senior goalkeeper Brynn Klaers will don the gloves this season, stepping into the role vacated by longtime starter Clara Bieber. Klaers credits the legacy of Bieber for shaping her approach, noting that the lessons learned from a seasoned predecessor have bolstered her confidence.
“I’ve learned a lot from Clara,” Klaers said, “and I’m excited to bring that experience to the field. My teammates have been incredibly supportive, constantly reinforcing my belief that I can lead the defense.”
Senior captain Taylor Merschman echoed that sentiment, describing Klaers as a steady presence who delivers clear instructions and lifts the group’s morale. “When she speaks, you know exactly what to do,” Merschman explained, highlighting the trust that has developed between the net‑minder and the outfield.
Kylie Bellino, another senior captain, added that the team’s resilience stems from a mindset focused on pushing through challenges rather than avoiding them. “We’re built on depth,” she said, “and every player knows they have a role that matters, no matter the position they fill.
Despite graduating ten seniors from the previous roster, the Lumberjacks have cultivated a familial atmosphere that emphasizes mutual encouragement and collective growth. The sense of community extends beyond the pitch, with teammates often gathering for informal sessions that reinforce their bond.
The season will open on August 27 against Rocori at the Bemidji Middle School soccer field, marking the first test of the new lineup and the team’s readiness for the Central Lakes Conference schedule. With a blend of seasoned leadership and fresh talent, the Lumberjacks enter the campaign confident that their “do” mentality will translate into results.
