A Promise Cut Short
Ben Conken, a 20‑year‑old standout from Cottage Hill Christian Academy in Mobile, Alabama, passed away on August 17, 2024 after a courageous battle with cancer. His death sent shockwaves through the local sports community, where he was celebrated not only for his athletic gifts but also for his unwavering spirit.
During his senior year he amassed 10 sacks and 85 tackles, forcing five fumbles, numbers that placed him among the most disruptive defenders in the region. He also excelled in basketball and baseball, showcasing a rare versatility that hinted at a broader athletic talent.
A Quiet Hero
Though he signed with the University of West Florida Argonauts as a linebacker, Conken never stepped onto the college field. His teammates recall a player who approached every practice with the intensity of a game‑day starter, embodying a mantra of “get up and do something” that guided his approach to both sport and his health.
Coach Carvel Jones described him as a “dawg on the football field” and highlighted his kindness off it, noting that Conken’s heroes were those who met needs without recognition. He lived by a principle of active engagement, constantly seeking ways to help others even as he faced his own illness.
Friends and family say his legacy will endure through the lives he touched, from the younger players he mentored to the community members he inspired to fight with dignity. Though his football dreams were cut short, his story continues to remind many that character and perseverance can outlast any scoreboard.
