A New Chapter in Smith's Hockey Journey
Ben Smith, a 2010 graduate of Boston College and a three‑time national champion, has accepted an assistant coaching role with Schiller Family’s men’s hockey program. The move follows a distinguished playing career that spanned the NHL, the AHL, and top European leagues, where he captained clubs in Germany and Sweden.
At Boston College, Smith helped the Eagles capture two National Championships (2008, 2010), three Hockey East Tournament titles, and two Beanpot crowns. Over 165 collegiate games he amassed 122 points (57 goals, 65 assists), establishing himself as a prolific scorer and leader.
Selected 169th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2008 NHL Draft, Smith went on to play 237 NHL games across seven seasons with Chicago, San Jose, Colorado, and Toronto. His most iconic moment arrived in 2013 when he contributed to the Blackhawks’ Stanley Cup championship, the pinnacle of his professional career.
International play added another layer to Smith’s résumé. He earned a bronze medal with Team USA at the 2015 IIHF World Championship in Czechia and later captained the Toronto Marlies to their first Calder Cup in 2017‑18, leading the AHL affiliate to a historic championship run.
After retiring from North American hockey, Smith spent seven seasons in Europe, winning German championships with Adler Mannheim (2019) and Red Bull München (2023). His stints in the Swedish SHL and German DEL demonstrated adaptability and a global perspective that he now hopes to share with younger players.
Most recently, Smith served as a Player Development Coordinator for the Boston Bruins during the 2025‑26 season, a role that honed his analytical and mentorship skills. His transition to an assistant coaching position at Schiller Family is seen as a natural progression, blending his playing pedigree with a commitment to player development.
