Former Boston College hockey player Ben Smith is poised to make a comeback at his alma mater, stepping into an assistant coaching role after Brendan Buckley announced his departure for personal reasons.
A Familiar Face Returns to the Ice
Smith’s résumé reads like a who’s who of collegiate and professional success. He captured two national titles with the Eagles in 2008 and 2010, compiled a 29‑25‑54 record over 237 NHL appearances for Chicago, San Jose, Toronto and Colorado, and added seven playoff goals in 27 games. His European stint spanned seven seasons in the German league, while nine years in North America saw him alternate between the NHL and the AHL.
Most recently, Smith spent a year in the Boston Bruins’ player development department, where he helped shape prospects and refine scouting strategies. That experience, coupled with his deep connection to the program, made the transition to the bench a natural next step.
The Eagles’ athletic director praised Smith’s blend of championship pedigree and professional know‑how, noting that his return “brings a winning mindset and a familiar voice to the locker room.” Players and alumni alike have expressed excitement about the prospect of learning from someone who has walked the same halls just a decade ago.
As the new coaching staff settles into its rhythm, the team hopes to translate Smith’s disciplined work ethic and international perspective into on‑ice success. The move signals a renewed focus on developing well‑rounded talent capable of competing at both the collegiate and professional levels.
