Benedictine High School’s football program is once again positioned as a dominant force in Georgia’s Class 5A, entering the upcoming season with a reputation that stretches beyond the local stadiums.
A New Chapter for the Cadets
Senior quarterback Omari Burse will take the snap as the starting signal‑caller after the departure of Cannon, bringing a blend of arm strength and poise that earned him the All‑Greater Savannah Baseball Player of the Year honor and a commitment to Alabama‑Birmingham.
The offense will lean heavily on returning stars Stanley Smart Jr. and Eron Mallard, both of whom have pledged to Virginia Tech and Purdue respectively, and who combined for more than 1,600 yards and 21 touchdowns last season.
Smart, who rushed for 1,004 yards and 12 touchdowns while averaging 6.9 yards per carry, returns to add a dynamic rushing threat, while Mallard’s 32 receptions for 657 yards and nine scores give the Cadets a potent aerial weapon.
Coach Danny Britt, who has guided the team to four state titles and is on the cusp of his 200th career win, emphasizes continuity and discipline, traits that helped the Cadets finish undefeated a year ago.
Rebuilding the Roster
The departure of key contributors such as quarterback Stephen Cannon (Texas Tech), receiver Bubba Frazier (Notre Dame) and defensive tackle Kam Cody (Clemson) presents a challenge, but the coaching staff has already secured transfers and additions that could fill the gaps.
Among the new faces, rising backfield star Johnathan Black is expected to make an immediate impact, while seniors Gavin Smith and Isaac Scott anchor a defense that aims to maintain the unit’s recent dominance.
Schedule and Home‑Field Advantage
The schedule features seven home games, including matchups against Toombs County, Hebron Christian and Camden County, providing ample opportunities for the Cadets to showcase their depth before the postseason.
Rankings and Outlook
Ranked No. 2 among Class 5A teams by the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the Cadets enter the season with high expectations, a sentiment echoed by players and alumni alike.
