Benedictine University’s women’s soccer team opened its season with a stunning 2‑1 victory over NAIA Preseason No. 7 John Brown University, a road win that underscored the squad’s resilience and attacking intent.
The Golden Eagles struck first in the 27th minute, capitalising on a rebound from a penalty kick to take an early lead, but the Ravens responded swiftly, equalising just ten minutes later when Teya Bigknife threaded a precise pass to Rowan Yows, whose finish restored parity.
A decisive finish
The match was decided in the 78th minute when Peyton Vogelbacher found the back of the net, the goal made possible by the first collegiate assist from Brynn Carroll, sparking jubilant celebrations among the visiting bench.
Between the equaliser and the winner, Benedictine’s defence held John Brown scoreless for the final 63 minutes, with goalkeeper Campbell Gregory logging a full 90 minutes and making three crucial saves to preserve the lead.
Looking ahead, the Ravens are scheduled to travel to Nebraska on August 26 to face Hastings College at 6 p.m., continuing a demanding road slate that tests their depth and stamina.
