Bentley University is grieving the loss of David Langley '81, a Hall of Famer whose on‑ice brilliance helped define a generation of Falcon hockey. Langley passed away on May 7, and the university will host a celebration of his life in June, inviting friends, family, and alumni to honor his memory.
A career built on championships
Langley’s name is etched into the program’s history for his role in capturing back‑to‑back ECAC Division III titles in 1980 and 1981. His contributions earned him a place in the Bentley Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993, where his statistical achievements were celebrated alongside the teams he helped elevate.
During his collegiate career he amassed 113 points, including 56 goals and 57 assists, ranking fourth on the all‑time scoring list at the time of his induction. He still holds the 14th spot in program history, a testament to a career that combined offensive flair with relentless competitiveness.
A freshman phenom and memorable moments
As a freshman, Langley burst onto the scene by leading the varsity squad in scoring with 17 goals and 17 assists. A highlight came on March 1, 1980, when he completed a hat trick at 3:58 of overtime, deflecting a slap shot to secure a 7‑6 victory over RIT. The following season he helped the team finish a remarkable 20‑1 record, earning second‑team All‑ECAC honors.
A family man and community pillar
Beyond the rink, Langley was a devoted husband to RoseMarie, a loving father and grandfather, and a friend to many. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and a wide circle of friends who will gather in June to celebrate a life that blended athletic excellence with personal warmth.
The outpouring of tributes reflects more than just his statistical legacy; it underscores the impact he had on teammates, coaches, and the broader university community. His story continues to inspire current players who view his dedication and skill as a benchmark for what can be achieved on and off the ice.
