Betsy Harris Joins Longwood Women’s Basketball as Assistant Coach

A decorated player and coach transitions to a new chapter with the Longwood Lancers

Betsy Harris, a former Alabama standout and longtime coach, has accepted an assistant coaching position with the Longwood women's basketball team. Her hiring marks the latest step in a career that blends elite playing experience with proven leadership on the sidelines.

Harris' time at Alabama was defined by precision shooting, as she set the school record for three‑point field goals and earned a Wade Trophy nomination for her collegiate performance. After college she continued her professional career overseas, competing in Greece, Iceland, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

From Player to Coach

Transitioning from the court to the bench, Harris built a reputation as a developer of talent. She led the Florida Southern Moccasins to a 169‑63 record over eight seasons, capturing six straight NCAA tournament berths and earning WBCA South Region Coach of the Year honors in 2018‑19.

Her most recent stop was at East Central Community College, where she served as head coach from 2022 to 2024. In that span she guided the Warriors to 26 victories and a quarterfinal appearance in the Region 23 tournament during the 2023‑24 campaign.

Prior to East Central, Harris spent three seasons at the College of Coastal Georgia, posting a 68‑27 record and securing a berth in the NAIA national tournament. She also guided the Mariners to multiple conference accolades, underscoring her ability to elevate programs at every level.

Beyond wins and records, Harris brings a deep understanding of the game's strategic nuances and a commitment to player development. Her background as an all‑state high school player in Decatur, Mississippi, where she helped lead her team to its first-ever Class 2‑A state championship, provides a unique perspective that she hopes to share with the Lancers.

Harris holds a bachelor's degree in sports management from the University of Alabama (1995) and a master's in teaching from West Alabama (2001). As she steps onto the Longwood campus, she joins a growing list of accomplished coaches contributing to the university's athletic ambitions.
