Organizers have assembled an international field for the Women’s Baseball World Cup, featuring teams from the United States, Canada, Hong Kong, Australia, Mexico and Korea. The schedule also includes a professional baseball reunion and the nation’s largest girls’ tournament, drawing participants such as Sophia Brown, Kat Williams and Gabrielle Torina.
Funding for the project has reached more than $7 million, with contributions from the city of Rockford, state Senator Steve Stadelman, and the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation, which pledged a $2 million gift. The city’s $1.5 million commitment will be spread over five years, while the foundation’s support underscores a broader philanthropic push.
The surrounding park has been renamed Maybelle Blair Park in honor of the 99‑year‑old former All‑American Girls Professional Baseball League pitcher, who in 1948 pitched for the Peoria Redwings. Her legacy, alongside that of historian Leslie Heaphy, highlights the long‑standing advocacy for girls in sport.
City officials and donors hope the reopening will catalyze further growth of women’s baseball in the region, providing a permanent stage for talent like Joe Chiarelli and future generations.
