The 2026 Big 12 football season is poised for dramatic storylines, as analysts from multiple outlets project a range of outcomes for the conference’s top players, coaches and title game matchups.
Offensive Standouts
LJ Martin of BYU is projected to repeat as the conference’s top offensive performer, building on his 2025 success that made him the de facto leader of the Big 12’s passing attack. Meanwhile, Avery Johnson from Kansas State is expected to rebound strongly, leveraging his dual‑threat capabilities to challenge for the offensive player award, while Noah Fifita’s return to Arizona could spark a sleeper run for the Wildcats.
On the defensive side, A.J. Holmes Jr. of Texas Tech is forecast to dominate with his 38‑tackle, 4.5‑sack performance from 2025, positioning him as the likely defensive player of the year. Cade Uluave of BYU also earned recognition for his 100‑tackle, five‑hurry season, underscoring his role as a key anchor on the Cougars’ defense.
Coaching Contenders
Willie Fritz of Houston emerges as a strong candidate for coach of the year, his leadership potentially guiding the Cougars to a conference title run, while Morgan Scalley of Utah is expected to sustain the Utes’ top‑ranked status after years of success under Kyle Whittingham. Brent Brennan at Arizona is highlighted for his team’s upward trajectory, with quarterback Noah Fifita poised to benefit from a full offseason of development.
Texas Tech is predicted to capture the Big 12 championship, banking on a potent defense and a powerful running game, while BYU remains a formidable opponent. Utah, bolstered by an advantageous schedule and a home matchup against BYU in Salt Lake City, also appears poised to reach the title game.
