BIG EAST Field Hockey 2026 Season Kicks Off with Competitive Non‑Conference Opener

Liberty opens against Maine as preseason favorite, while other teams begin their campaigns across the weekend

Opening Weekend Sets the Tone

The 2026 BIG EAST field hockey season opens on Friday, August 28, with six conference teams stepping onto the pitch for non‑conference matchups. The early slate is designed to give each program a taste of competition before the league championship arrives later in the year.

At noon on opening day, defending champion Liberty hosts Maine in a highly anticipated debut. The Flames enter the season as the unanimous preseason favorite after capturing both the regular‑season and tournament titles in 2025, and they will look to extend that momentum against the Black Bears.

Other programs also begin their campaigns that weekend. Temple, Providence, Old Dominion, Villanova and Georgetown each have games scheduled for Friday, while UConn, the preseason No. 2 in the coaches’ poll, opens its schedule on Saturday against New Hampshire at noon. The variety of opponents provides a rigorous test for each squad.

Individual accolades were announced alongside the schedule. Ava Borkowski of Villanova earned Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, Bo Martina of Providence was named Preseason Midfielder of the Year, and Liberty’s Dara Semmartin and Diane Saint Martin received Preseason Defensive Player and Goalkeeper of the Year honors, respectively.

These non‑conference contests serve a dual purpose: they allow teams to fine‑tune tactics and build chemistry, while also giving fans early excitement ahead of the 2026 BIG EAST Championship. All games will be played in the Eastern Time Zone, with matchups spread across Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
