A New Era for Women’s Basketball Officiating
A coalition of Division I conferences has come together to create a unified women’s basketball officiating alliance, aiming to raise the standard of refereeing across the sport.
The alliance will employ a collaborative system for assigning, training, evaluating, and overseeing officials, with an emphasis on geographic efficiency and consistent application of rules.
Leadership and Vision
Big East commissioner Val Ackerman said he is proud of the group’s role in strengthening women’s college basketball officiating, noting the partnership builds on years of collective effort.
Pualani Spurlock-Welsh, a veteran official who has served on every women’s NCAA Tournament and officiated four Final Fours, will lead the alliance as its primary supervisor.
A Look Back
The initiative follows the retirement of Deb Williamson, who previously guided an informal women’s officiating network, marking a transition from ad‑hoc arrangements to a structured, conference‑wide framework.
Beyond the immediate operational benefits, the alliance reflects a broader commitment to develop emerging officials and to ensure that women’s basketball receives the same level of officiating excellence expected in the men’s game.
