The BIG EAST Conference has joined forces with seven other Division I conferences to create a groundbreaking women’s basketball officiating alliance, a move designed to elevate the standard of game control across the sport.
Leadership and Vision
At the helm of this initiative is Pualani Spurlock‑Welsh, a veteran official with more than 18 years of experience at the highest levels of college basketball, who will serve as the alliance’s Supervisor of Officials.
Spurlock‑Welsh brings a résumé that includes full‑time officiating since 2011, over 75 Division I women’s games each season, and repeated assignments to the NCAA Tournament and Women’s Final Four, as well as stints in the WNBA, NBA G League and international competitions.
The alliance’s mandate extends beyond simple assignment; it seeks to identify promising officials, recruit them into the system, and retain them through structured pathways, while also standardising training, education, mentorship and performance evaluation.
By pooling resources, the consortium will develop collaborative assigning strategies that maximise geographic efficiency, ensuring that officials are placed where they are needed most while reducing travel burdens.
Seasonal game‑management calls will provide a forum for real‑time updates, feedback and continuous improvement, reinforcing a culture of transparency and shared best practices across the participating conferences.
Commissioner Val Ackerman praised the effort, stating that the alliance represents a decisive step toward strengthening women’s college basketball officiating and preserving the integrity of the game.
