Big Ten Introduces New Player Availability Reporting Rules for 2026 Season

Weekly updates and gameday submissions aim to increase transparency across conference play

Big Ten Unveils New Availability Reporting Framework

The Big Ten Conference has rolled out a comprehensive Availability Reporting Process for the 2026 football season, mandating weekly updates that begin three days before each contest and culminate with a gameday submission.

Schools must file four reports per week, with deadlines set at 8 p.m. Eastern (7 p.m. Central, 5 p.m. Pacific) on the third, second and first days preceding kickoff, plus a final report two hours before the game starts.

Mid‑week status designations — Probable, Questionable, Doubtful, Out, or Out (1st Half) — give coaches and fans a clearer picture of who will be on the field, while gameday reports will categorize players as Game Time Decision, Out, or Out (1st Half).

Anyone not listed on a report is automatically considered Available, and visiting teams are required to disclose the health of athletes who travel with the squad or who occupy the two‑deep units on offense, defense or special teams when they face conference opponents.

The new policy applies only to games against fellow Big Ten members, meaning non‑conference matchups will not be subject to the same reporting cadence.

The first set of reports will be due before the September 19 contests that pit USC against Rutgers and Purdue against UCLA, and all submissions will be posted on BigTen.org for public access.

The 2026 season officially opens with USC hosting San Jose State at 3 p.m. ET on NBC, a game that will showcase the new reporting framework as the conference looks to build on its recent dominance.

The Big Ten has captured the last three College Football Playoff national championships, and three schools sit in the top six of the preseason AP poll, with eight teams ranked inside the top 22, underscoring the competitive depth that the new rules aim to preserve.
