As the 2026 college football season looms, analysts are already scanning the Big Ten for teams that could defy expectations and emerge as unexpected contenders.
Iowa enters the conversation despite a wave of personnel departures, anchored by a coaching staff that has remained intact under head coach Kirk Ferentz and defensive coordinator Phil Parker.
The Hawkeyes have posted double‑digit win totals in eight of the past nine seasons, and last year they fell just five points short in each of their four defeats, a testament to how close they consistently operate to the top tier.
Their schedule, however, presents a gauntlet: a three‑game stretch against Michigan, Ohio State and Washington that could either cement their status or expose vulnerabilities.
Minnesota's Returning Firepower
Just across the conference, Minnesota is banking on continuity and experience. Head coach P.J. Fleck retains a core that includes running back Darius Taylor, one of the conference’s most dynamic backs when fully healthy, and quarterback Drake Lindsay, who closed the previous season with eight touchdowns and no interceptions in his final four games.
Defensively, the Golden Gophers boast standout talent such as edge rusher Anthony Smith, who led the Big Ten with 12.5 sacks last year, and cornerback John Nestor, who topped the conference with six interceptions.
Maverick Baranowski, the team’s leading tackler, returns to anchor the defense, adding depth to a unit that finished among the top tiers in several statistical categories.
UCLA's New Era
Meanwhile, UCLA is embarking on a new chapter under head coach Bob Chesney. The former Holy Cross architect engineered a school‑record 12‑win season in 2022 and later guided James Madison to a 12‑win campaign and a College Football Playoff appearance in 2025, a track record that has raised optimism in Westwood.
Chesney’s offensive philosophy, which blends a balanced rushing attack with a disciplined passing game, could translate well to the rigors of Big Ten competition, especially if the Bruins capitalize on their recruiting momentum.
If these three programs can navigate their respective challenges, the 2026 season may prove far more unpredictable than many forecasts suggest.
