Big Y Restores Power and Renames Field for Youth Baseball Tournament

A blizzard‑damaged light pole at Mattakeesett Fields was replaced thanks to a donation from Big Y, enabling the Kids Helping Kids tournament to proceed with over 100 games, and the field was renamed in gratitude.

When a historic blizzard swept through the town last winter, one of the outfield light posts at Mattakeesett Fields was knocked down, threatening the upcoming Kids Helping Kids tournament that was set to feature more than 100 games.

A New Light for a Beloved Field

Big Y, the regional grocery chain, stepped in with a generous donation that covered the cost of a 50‑foot metal tower, allowing the league to restore illumination just in time for the event.

The new pole was installed on schedule, and the league seized the opportunity to honor the contributor by renaming the field “Big Y Field,” a tribute that has already become a point of pride for players and families.

Organizers, including Brian Shanahan, John Mahoney and Michael Raimondi, coordinated the rapid fundraising effort and oversaw the installation, ensuring that the tournament could proceed without interruption.

The restored lighting not only salvaged the tournament but also reinforced the league’s commitment to providing a safe, welcoming environment for young athletes across the region.
