Bill Belichick, head coach of the University of North Carolina’s football program, will hold a press conference on Monday, marking his first public remarks since the resignation of general manager Michael Lombardi.
Lombardi stepped down after a month of paid administrative leave and an ongoing investigation that alleged drug use by his son Steve Belichick and inappropriate relationships among coaching, recruiting and player staff, prompting the university to hire outside counsel to pursue the matter. His resignation statement thanked UNC Chancellor Lee Roberts and Belichick but did not reference any corrective actions taken by the university.
Investigation Ongoing
The university has reiterated its commitment to continue the investigation and to consider appropriate corrective actions based on the findings, while Lombardi’s attorney Tom Mars described the probe as a ‘witch hunt’ and claimed UNC had no grounds to terminate his client’s employment.
Belichick’s five‑year, $50‑million contract obligates him to comply with university, NCAA and ACC policies and to promote a culture of compliance, a responsibility that now includes full cooperation with the ongoing inquiry.
The 2025 season began poorly with a 4‑8 record, partly due to Lombardi’s earlier comments about the program’s NFL experience, yet the Tar Heels captured attention with a 15‑10 victory over TCU in Dublin, Ireland, marking the first ACC win against a Power Five opponent this season.
Looking ahead, UNC’s schedule features matchups against East Tennessee State, Clemson and the fourth‑ranked Notre Dame, as the program seeks to translate the Dublin win into sustained success while the investigation proceeds.
