Bill Currier, the longtime architect of Fairfield University’s baseball program, announced his retirement after 15 seasons at the helm, closing a chapter that reshaped the Stags into a consistent contender.
Under his guidance the team amassed more than 400 victories, captured ten of the last eleven Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament appearances, and secured six regular‑season titles in the past decade, a turnaround that began when the program had gone without a tournament berth for over a decade.
The 2021 breakthrough
The 2021 campaign stands as the pinnacle of Currier’s tenure, when the Stags surged to a 28‑win season, cracked the national Top 25, and earned the program’s first at‑large NCAA Tournament bid, ultimately advancing to a regional final after a memorable victory over Arizona State.
Beyond the wins, Currier oversaw a series of facility upgrades and fundraising drives that modernized the program’s infrastructure, while also mentoring assistants who would later take on leadership roles within the sport.
Looking ahead
With the team poised to finish the current season at 27‑21 and tied for second in the MAAC regular‑season standings, Currier has named longtime assistant Brian Fay as his successor, citing Fay’s eight years of hands‑on experience and shared commitment to the program’s culture.
Currier says he plans to spend more time with his family and enjoy a schedule of his own making, ending a career that has left an indelible mark on Fairfield baseball and the broader collegiate landscape.
