Billings Skyview Football Coach John Simpson Resigns After Winless Streak

Simpson's three‑year tenure ends following a 2‑17 record and a season‑opening loss to Helena High

The road to resignation

John Simpson, the head coach of the Billings Skyview Falcons, announced his resignation this week after a three‑year stint that produced just two victories against seventeen defeats.

Simpson, hired in 2024 to take the helm of the program, oversaw the team through the 2024 and 2025 seasons, during which the Falcons posted a 1‑8 record in each year, culminating in a 2‑17 overall mark.

The resignation comes on the heels of a season‑opening loss to Helena High, a 41‑14 defeat at Sam McDonald Stadium that underscored the team’s struggles.

Mark Sulser, executive director of athletics and activities for Billings Public Schools, confirmed that an interim head coach will be appointed later this week as the district works to stabilize the program.

Simpson becomes the third coach in Skyview’s modern history, following Ron Lebsock, who led the Falcons from 1985 to 2017, and Nathan Wahl, who served from 2018 to 2023.

The move reflects a broader trend of rapid turnover in high school football leadership across Montana, as schools grapple with performance pressures and community expectations.
