A Hall of Fame Redemption
The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame has opened a new exhibit that chronicles the life of Billy Cannon, the celebrated Louisiana football star whose career spanned the 1950s and whose story later took a dramatic turn.
Artifacts ranging from game‑worn jerseys to personal items are displayed alongside photographs of Cannon shaking hands with President Nixon, offering visitors a glimpse into a career that helped shape the state’s football legacy.
Family Voices and Artifacts
Bunnie Cannon, the star’s daughter, has said the family wishes to keep the memorabilia together so that the public can learn from both his triumphs on the field and the challenges he later faced.
Dot Cannon, his wife, recognized several items that once hung in their home, including a framed photo of Billy with President Nixon, adding a personal dimension to the display.
Redemption Behind the Artifacts
After serving a two‑and‑a‑half year sentence in a federal prison in Texarkana, Cannon returned to Louisiana and took a position as Dental Director for a state facility, where his efforts improved a program that had been negatively impacting inmates.
The exhibit will remain at the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame until April 2027, serving as a reminder of the complex legacy of a man who left an indelible mark on the state’s sports history.
