The Binghamton Bearcats women's basketball team set aside their usual training routine for a historic walk through Downtown Binghamton’s Freedom Trail, a 2.5‑mile, 14‑stop route that celebrates the city’s abolitionist and civil‑rights heritage. Senior captain Anne Bailey led the group, guiding them from the newly dedicated Harriet Tubman Statue to a series of sites that have shaped the region’s fight for liberty.
A Walk Through History
The tour began at the bronze Harriet Tubman Statue, unveiled in 2025 near the Harriet Tubman Center for Freedom and Equality on Binghamton University’s campus. The sculpture honors the famed conductor of the Underground Railroad and serves as a focal point for the trail’s narrative of resistance and hope.
From there the party moved to Brigham Hall, a historic meeting place where abolitionists such as Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony once spoke. Inside, the players learned about local conductors Elias Hawley and Stephen Hand, who helped freedom seekers find shelter in the area, and they reflected on the hall’s legacy as a hub of early civil‑rights activism.
Senior forward Yanniah Boyd, who joined the excursion with curiosity, said the experience deepened her connection to the community she represents on the court. “Seeing the places where people fought for freedom makes the game feel bigger,” she noted, adding that the history will stay with the team as they prepare for the upcoming season.
