Birmingham is marking Juneteenth with a month‑long series of events that weave together remembrance, celebration and community engagement, reflecting the city’s deep roots in the struggle for equality.
A Baseball Tribute to the Negro Leagues
At the heart of the commemoration is the East‑West Classic, a tribute to the Negro Leagues All‑Star Games, scheduled for Rickwood Field. Hall of Famer CC Sabathia will captain the West squad while former All‑Star Chris Young leads the East side. The matchup will feature players who collectively bring 276 Major League seasons to the diamond, underscoring the enduring impact of the Negro Leagues on the sport.
Rickwood Field, recognized as the oldest professional ballpark in America, provides a historic backdrop that links past and present. The game serves not only as a sporting event but also as a living museum of African‑American baseball heritage.
The Official National Juneteenth of Alabama Commemoration will take place at Kelly Ingram Park, a site that witnessed pivotal moments of the Civil Rights Movement. The park’s legacy as a gathering place for protest and resilience adds a powerful dimension to the festivities.
A district‑wide Juneteenth Jubilee will invite residents to explore the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the 16th Street Baptist Church and the A.G. Gaston Motel, all offering free admission during the celebration. Deborah Bowie, newly appointed president and CEO of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, highlighted the Jubilee as a chance for the community to "experience history firsthand" while honoring the city’s transformative role.
The Jubilee’s block party will feature food trucks, local vendors, live music and a Community Village designed to foster connection among neighbors. An activation called "Joy in Bloom" will showcase a floral‑adorned carriage, adding a visual flourish to the festivities.
Additional events include a black‑tie soirée titled "A Vibe Called Black," hosted by the Past Present Future Organization, and a family‑focused celebration in Ensley that promises activities for all ages. The Kiwanis Club of Vulcan will also stage its fourth annual Sips & Scholarships Juneteenth Brunch, blending philanthropy with festivity.
Rounding out the month, the Magic City Freedom Fest will adopt a marketplace and festival format, giving attendees the opportunity to explore local crafts, services and cultural exhibits while celebrating freedom and community.
