A Strategic Addition to Vanderbilt's Infield
Blaize Ward, a sophomore transfer from Missouri, announced his commitment to Vanderbilt baseball this week, filling the vacancy left by the departure of Mike Mancini at second base.
During his freshman year with the Tigers, Ward posted a .296 batting average, including five doubles and four home runs, while striking out only 15% of the time at the plate.
At 6‑1 and 185 pounds, the left‑handed hitter from Maumelle, Arkansas, brings a blend of speed and power that the Commodores have been seeking after both Mancini and Carter Johnstone exited the program.
Ward's arrival is part of a broader trend of high‑impact transfers who join new programs as sophomores, gaining two full seasons of eligibility and often becoming key contributors.
He will join fellow newcomers Niko Brini, an outfielder from Wofford, and Bud Coombs, an outfielder from Maryland, as part of a recruiting class that also includes transfers from James Madison and Cal State Fullerton.
Vanderbilt's athletic department highlighted the move as a “clear need” addressed by a player who not only fits the defensive profile but also matches the left‑handed bat that Mancini provided.
Looking Ahead
With Ward slated to be draft‑eligible only in 2028, the Commodores can count on his development over the next several years, potentially turning the second‑base position into a stable pillar of their lineup.
Coach Tim Corbin expressed confidence in the incoming class, noting that the blend of experience and raw talent could help the team compete strongly in the SEC and beyond.
