Blake Anderson has been named head coach of Southern Miss, taking over the program after serving many years as offensive coordinator. His appointment follows the departure of Charles Huff for Memphis and comes after a long‑standing pursuit of the position that began in 2011.
A long‑awaited opportunity
Anderson recalled interviewing for the role after former coach Larry Fedora left for North Carolina, describing a mix of confidence in the meeting and uncertainty about any guarantees. When the position finally opened, he felt a sense of relief and excitement, having previously sought the job in 2011 without success.
The team faced a massive overhaul, with more than 30 seniors graduating and 38 players entering the transfer portal. This exodus created a vacuum that Anderson and his staff moved quickly to fill.
A rapid recruitment drive
In just 21 days, Anderson and his staff signed over 70 new players. The roster construction deliberately balanced younger athletes who still have multiple years of eligibility with seasoned players who may contribute for only a single season.
The new coaching staff includes Ellis Johnson, Jeremy McClain and Davis Wilson, who join Anderson in shaping the next chapter of Southern Miss football. Their involvement underscores a coordinated effort to blend fresh talent with proven experience.
Looking ahead, Anderson hopes the rebuilt squad can compete effectively in the coming season, leveraging the momentum of a swift recruitment process and the continuity of his offensive philosophy.
