Blake Grimmer, the Tennessee Vols’ versatile infielder, has decided to pull his name from the upcoming MLB Draft and will suit up for the Volunteers again in the 2027 season. The decision marks a reversal of his earlier plan to pursue professional opportunities, and it underscores his commitment to finishing his college career in Knoxville.
The redshirt junior posted a .283 batting average during the 2026 campaign, adding 13 home runs and 36 runs batted in. Those figures not only ranked him among the team’s most consistent hitters but also highlighted his ability to deliver power in key moments.
He has proven his flexibility, having logged time at first, second and third base, and he settled into the No. 2 spot in the lineup after an injury sidelined Josh Elander. That placement gave him a prime opportunity to drive in runs and set the tone for the Vols’ offense.
Infield reshuffles ahead of a new era
The arrival of Wyatt Hanoian, a former Air Force standout who hit .357 with 49 RBIs last season, adds depth to the Vols’ middle infield. Hanoian’s strong performance has sparked speculation that Grimmer may shift to a different position to accommodate the new talent.
The 2027 season will also be framed by the MLB Draft, scheduled to begin on July 11, a date that looms over the decisions of many college prospects. While Grimmer’s path diverges from the draft, his return is expected to make him one of Tennessee’s top players next year.
