Blues Send Milton Gastrin on Loan to Swedish Club Brynäs IF

The 19‑year‑old forward, drafted by Washington, will spend the season in the SHL before a possible return to St. Louis or the Thunderbirds.

The St. Louis Blues announced Tuesday that they have loaned forward Milton Gastrin to Brynäs IF, a club competing in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). The 19‑year‑old, a native of Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, joins the SHL roster after a trade that brought him from the Washington Capitals.

Gastrin was originally selected by Washington in the second round of the 2025 NHL Draft, landing at pick 37, and had previously signed a contract that included a stint with the Capitals’ development camp. His move to Sweden marks the next step in a career that has already seen him notch 24 points in 39 SHL games for MoDo last season.

During the 2024‑25 campaign he contributed 10 goals and 14 assists for MoDo, and added four points — one goal and three assists — across 13 playoff appearances. The forward’s size, listed at 6‑foot‑1 and 194 pounds, gives him a physical presence that coaches in the SHL have praised.

The loan agreement includes a clause that allows Gastrin to return to the Blues or their AHL affiliate, the Springfield Thunderbirds, once Brynäs’ season concludes. This flexibility reflects the Blues’ strategy of managing the player’s development while keeping an eye on the NHL roster.

Alexander Steen, a veteran of the Blues’ lineup, has followed the youngster’s progress closely, as have prospects Connor McMichael and Jordan Kyrou, who are also watching the SHL season unfold.

A Glimpse of What’s to Come

The Blues’ management sees the loan as a calculated step toward integrating younger talent into their system, a strategy that could pay dividends in the coming seasons.
