Bo Gerbracht, a junior at Central College in Iowa, has been selected to join the United States Deaf Baseball Team that will compete at the World Deaf Baseball Championships in Kanagawa, Japan, this November.
Born with profound sensorineural hearing loss in his left ear and a moderately severe conductive loss in his right ear, Gerbracht processes only about 55 percent of sound on his right side. The condition has shaped his approach to communication, academics and sport since childhood.
From Camp Volunteer to International Contender
Three years ago, Gerbracht began volunteering at a deaf‑baseball camp in Des Moines, a program that introduced children with hearing impairments to the fundamentals of the game. The camp’s coaching staff, including members of the USA Deaf Baseball squad, noticed his enthusiasm and willingness to fill in during exhibition matches.
Those impromptu appearances caught the eye of national team scouts, who invited the Iowa native to try out for the upcoming world championship roster. The tournament, scheduled for November 1‑3, will feature teams from around the globe, with the United States having secured a silver medal at the 2024 edition.
Representing More Than a Team
Gerbracht expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity, noting that wearing the national jersey is a tribute to the family, coaches and teammates who have supported his journey. “It’s an honor to represent the USA and show that deaf athletes can compete at the highest level,” he said in a recent interview.
Balancing a demanding information systems major with a spot on the college pitching staff, Gerbracht has logged 13 career appearances, delivering 14 innings of relief work. His statistics reflect not only athletic skill but also resilience in managing a hearing‑related disability while excelling academically.
Campus Support and Community
Central College’s Student Support Services have played a pivotal role in his success, providing note‑taking assistance and arranging classroom accommodations that mitigate the impact of his hearing loss. Professors, he notes, have shown flexibility in adapting lecture formats to his needs.
Beyond the classroom, baseball has become a cornerstone of his college transition. The camaraderie of the team has offered a sense of belonging that he describes as “the first place I truly felt accepted.”
The upcoming World Deaf Baseball Championships will be held in Kanagawa, Japan, where Gerbracht will join teammates from across the United States in a celebration of inclusive sport. The event underscores growing visibility for deaf athletes on an international stage.
