Ball State University announced this week that Bob Keller has been named its new pitching coach, bringing a wealth of experience from both collegiate and professional baseball. The hiring marks a strategic move to reinforce the Cardinals' pitching development program as they look to build on recent successes.
A Proven Track Record
Keller’s résumé reads like a masterclass in developing elite arms. Over a decade at the University of Michigan, he helped the Wolverines post top‑tier ERAs and coached ten pitchers who earned first‑round MLB draft selections. His expertise was further honed while serving as the Mississippi/Louisiana area scout for the Seattle Mariners from 2018 to 2020.
A Journey Across the Diamond
Before arriving at Ball State, Keller held head coaching positions at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and assistant roles at South Alabama, Dallas Baptist University, and Birmingham‑Southern College. He also began his career at Georgia State in 1994, a path that eventually led to his most recent post as an assistant and pitching coach for the United States Sports University in Daphne, Alabama.
Looking Ahead
Both Keller and head coach Rich Maloney expressed enthusiasm about reuniting and building on the program’s momentum. Keller, whose son Charlie already plays for the Cardinals, is eager to shape the next generation of pitchers. Maloney highlighted Keller’s vast knowledge of pitching and his ability to elevate staff performance, noting that the partnership could position Ball State among the nation’s elite in the coming years.
Keller holds a bachelor of science in physical education from Biola University and a bachelor of science in kinesiology from Georgia State, underscoring a blend of scholarly insight and hands‑on experience that he will bring to the Ball State staff.
