Bobby Crockett, a celebrated wide receiver who helped the University of Arkansas capture the 1964 national title, died on May 30 at the age of 83. He had been battling stage‑4 pancreatic cancer and complications from pneumonia in his final days.
A Career of Distinction
During his collegiate years, Crockett was a linchpin of a Razorbacks squad that posted a 22‑game winning streak and back‑to‑back Southwest Conference championships. In 1964 he made a decisive 34‑yard touchdown reception that secured a 14‑13 victory over Texas, and the following year he logged a Cotton Bowl‑record 10 catches for 129 yards in a win over the Longhorns. His performances earned him All‑America honors and a place on the All‑Decade team of the 1960s.
Off the Field
After his playing days, Crockett returned to Arkansas where he built a modest law practice in Clinton and ran Crockett’s Country Store and Canoe Rental near the Buffalo River. The businesses became gathering spots for locals, reflecting the same community spirit he displayed on the gridiron.
His legacy was cemented with inductions into both the UA Sports Hall of Honor in 2002 and the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. Former teammates and coaches remember him not only for his toughness and skill but also for the integrity he brought to every facet of his life.
