Legendary college football coach Bobby Keasler died Tuesday at the age of 80, leaving behind a legacy that reshaped the program at McNeese State and inspired countless players and coaches across the Southland Conference.
A Journey Defined by Championships
From the moment he took the helm prior to the 1990 season, Keasler guided the Cowboys to four Southland Conference titles between 1991 and 1997, culminating in a historic 1997 run that saw the team compete in the FCS National Championship game. His 1995 squad went undefeated in the regular season and topped the national rankings, a testament to his ability to build winning cultures.
Over nine seasons at McNeese, he amassed a 78‑34‑2 record, making him the school’s all‑time winningest coach. His teams averaged 8.7 victories per year, and in four of those seasons they reached double‑digit wins. The program produced 53 first‑team All‑Southland selections and 16 All‑America honorees under his tutelage.
Recognition and Lasting Impact
Keasler’s contributions earned him five conference Coach of the Year awards and three Louisiana Coach of the Year honors. In 2014 he was inducted into the Southland Conference Hall of Honor, and a decade earlier he entered the McNeese Hall of Fame. The following year, the conference named him the 1990s Coach of the Decade, cementing his place among the era’s greats.
After stepping down from his role at McNeese, Keasler spent three years as head coach at the University of Louisiana at Monroe before retiring to his hometown of Lake Charles. He returned to the city he loved, where his influence continues to be felt in high school programs and community events.
