The College Baseball Hall of Fame will welcome two former Texas Longhorns, Bobby Layne and Huston Street, into its ranks this February, honoring careers that left an indelible mark on the program.
A Dual‑Sport Star and a Modern‑Day Closer
Layne first dazzled as a pitcher, compiling a 35‑3 record with a perfect 28‑0 mark in Southwest Conference play and striking out 386 batters. He threw two no‑hitters in 1946, earned All‑American honors as a quarterback in 1947, and finished his football career with 3,145 passing yards, placing him among the top ten Heisman Trophy candidates twice.
Street, a right‑handed reliever, set a school record with 41 saves and posted a 1.31 ERA. He earned First‑Team All‑Big 12 honors three times, was named the conference’s Freshman of the Year in 2002, and led Texas to three consecutive College World Series appearances from 2002 to 2004. His professional career culminated with 324 saves and 665 strikeouts in Major League Baseball, earning him the 2005 American League Rookie of the Year award.
A Shared Legacy at the University of Texas
Both players emerged from the University of Texas, an institution whose athletic heritage continues to shape collegiate baseball. Their achievements not only added chapters to the Longhorns’ storied past but also inspired future generations of pitchers and position players.
The induction ceremony will bring together fans, alumni, and current athletes to celebrate a legacy defined by excellence, perseverance, and a deep connection to Texas baseball tradition.
