Investigator Bobby Porter is set to host a basketball‑themed fundraiser on August 22, aiming to raise money that will enable a group of Dillon County students to travel to the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.
Roots of a Mentorship Program
Six years ago, while serving as a school resource officer at Gordon Elementary School, Porter launched mentorship initiatives that paired students with positive role models. The program has since evolved into a broader effort to connect young people with mentors who can guide them toward future opportunities.
The upcoming fundraiser will take place from noon to 4 p.m. at Old Latta Highway, where participating law‑enforcement agencies will run a dunking booth and engage directly with youth in a relaxed, interactive setting.
Community Partners Join the Cause
Representatives from the Dillon County Sheriff’s Office, Latta Police Department, Dillon Police Department, Lake View Police Department, the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources will all be present, each contributing to the event’s mission of fostering trust between officers and the community.
Beyond the excitement of shooting hoops, Porter emphasizes that the trip is designed to expose students to experiences outside their county, encouraging them to envision broader possibilities and strive for personal growth.
Looking Ahead
By blending sport, mentorship and community service, the fundraiser illustrates how local agencies can collaborate to create lasting impact. Porter hopes the initiative will inspire participants to pursue education, career goals and civic engagement that extend far beyond Dillon County.
