Booker High School announced in August 2026 that it would cancel its varsity football program for the upcoming season, citing safety concerns and a need to restore competitive balance after dismissing former head coach Carlos Woods and losing several players to transfers.
Woods’ dismissal followed a series of departures that left the football roster thin, prompting the administration to reconsider the future of the program.
A New Coaching Direction
Lance Hoeltke, a former University of South Florida quarterback with fifteen years of coaching experience, was hired to take over the program and reshape its philosophy.
Hoeltke has said that player development and a positive experience for the athletes are his top priorities, rather than immediate on‑field success.
Accordingly, the school will field a junior‑varsity team this season while laying plans to rebuild a full varsity program for future years.
Principal Jamal Crook emphasized that the administration’s focus is on ensuring every student‑athlete feels valued and supported, moving away from the pressures of past expectations.
A core group of coaches, many of whom are alumni of Booker High School, have remained on staff to assist with the transition and mentor the younger players.
The dismissal of Carlos Woods remains under investigation by the Sarasota Police Department, though officials have not confirmed any student‑related wrongdoing and have declined to release details about the alleged misconduct.
