Halloween clash looms between Eagles and Blue Devils
A Halloween night showdown is set to pit the Boston College Eagles against the Duke Blue Devils, marking the second straight road game for Boston College in a condensed three‑out‑of‑four stretch. The matchup arrives as both programs navigate contrasting narratives heading into the latter half of the season.
The two schools have met nine times since their first encounter in 1927, with Boston College holding a 5‑4 lead in the all‑time series. Duke, however, has won three of the last four meetings, highlighted by a 38‑31 victory in 2022 that underscored the Blue Devils’ ability to close out tight games.
Duke’s 2025 campaign culminated in an ACC Championship and a Sun Bowl triumph, but the triumph was followed by the departure of quarterback Darian Mensah to the transfer portal and the loss of top receiver Cooper Barkate. The Blue Devils will therefore field a rebuilt offensive scheme heading into the Halloween clash.
Head coach Manny Diaz’s defense, which forced 24 turnovers a year ago, returns key middle linebackers Luke Mergott and Kendall Johnson, aiming to tighten a unit that struggled with third‑down efficiency last season. The defense will look to improve on a 276.8 passing‑yard average and a 45 percent third‑down conversion rate against Boston College.
On the offensive side, Walker Eget, formerly of San Jose State, is expected to assume the starting quarterback role, while tight end Jeremiah Halsey and transfers Jared Richardson and Javen Nicholas add depth. Running back Nate Sheppard, an All‑ACC rusher with 1,132 yards and 11 touchdowns last year, is poised to shoulder a larger load.
Boston College’s own season trajectory will become clearer by late October, but the central question remains whether the Eagles can upset the reigning ACC champions despite their recent road‑game challenges. The outcome could set the tone for the remainder of the Eagles’ schedule.
