Season Opener
Bowie State University’s football team will kick off the 2026 season on September 5 when it hosts Virginia State at Rogers Stadium in Ettrick, Virginia. The game marks the first CIAA matchup of the year and arrives with the Bulldogs ranked eighth in the preseason poll, a position that reflects both optimism and the challenge of improving on a 3‑7 overall record from the previous season.
Head coach Dawson Odums, who took over the program earlier this year, inherits a squad that returns several standout performers. Junior running back Micah Robinson, who earned Second Team All‑CIAA honors in 2025, led the team with 624 rushing yards and five touchdowns, while sophomore Maximus Jones added 572 yards and seven scores. Wide receiver Antwain Banks contributed 18 catches for 230 yards and three touchdowns, and fellow receiver Challenger Valentine is expected to add depth to the passing attack.
The Bulldogs will face a demanding stretch, including four consecutive road games against Division I FCS opponents such as Delaware State and Alabama A&M. After a homecoming matchup against Shaw on October 3 and CIAA contests with Virginia Union and Johnson C. Smith, the regular season will close with a November 7 game against Lincoln (PA).
Key Players to Watch
Robinson’s blend of power and agility, Jones’s ability to find the end zone, and Banks’s reliable hands make them central to the Bulldogs’ offensive plans. On defense, returning linemen Dalan Johnson and Deshawn Willoughby will anchor a front that produced 24 tackles, five tackles for loss and three sacks in 2025, providing a foundation for a unit hoping to tighten up against high‑powered opponents.
Virginia State enters the season with a 6‑4 overall record and a 4‑3 mark in the CIAA, having averaged 27.5 points and 420.6 yards per game a year ago while limiting opponents to 24.2 points. Their head coach, Dr. Henry Frazier III, is a former Bowie State player and assistant who now returns to face his alma mater, adding a personal narrative to the opening contest.
Both programs see the early schedule as an opportunity to build momentum. For Bowie State, the goal is to translate preseason optimism into on‑field success and contend for the CIAA Championship, while Virginia State aims to capitalize on a strong finish and reinforce its upward trajectory under Frazier’s leadership.
