Flag Bearers Take Center Stage
As the world counts down to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, a unique group of teenage ambassadors is preparing to step onto the sport’s biggest stage. Selected from Boys & Girls Clubs across the United States, these young athletes will carry the iconic Coca‑Cola flag onto the pitch, blending the excitement of global football with a grassroots mission to broaden youth access to soccer.
Among them is Ximena, the 2025–26 National Youth of the Year, who described the honor as a dream realized. “I never imagined I’d be standing beside the world’s best players, representing my club and my community,” she said, her voice echoing the hopes of countless peers who see soccer as a pathway to confidence and belonging.
The ceremony will also feature Alex Rodriguez, a former Boys & Girls Clubs alumnus and now a celebrated figure in sports, who will take part in the ceremonial coin toss. Rodriguez, whose own journey from a neighborhood club to professional mentorship illustrates the program’s reach, will symbolize the bridge between grassroots participation and elite competition.
The flag‑bearing role is only the visible tip of a larger effort. Over the past year, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America has distributed 500 soccer kits, engaged roughly 50,000 youngsters in organized play, and trained nearly 2,000 coaches alongside 100 teen referees. These numbers reflect a systematic push to dismantle barriers that have long limited soccer participation in underserved neighborhoods.
Funding and expertise flow from a coalition of partners. The New York Life Foundation will train 10,000 coaches and upgrade 10 fields, pitches or courts over three years, while the Soccer Forward Foundation and Buffalo Wild Wings Foundation have pledged resources to expand safe playing environments. Together, these collaborations aim to transform local parks into vibrant hubs where the next generation can chase a ball without fear.
Beyond the field, the Coca‑Cola Future Careers Academy equips teens with insights into sports‑related professions, from event management to analytics. By pairing on‑field experience with career guidance, the initiative seeks to turn a simple love of the game into a sustainable future for participants and their communities.
