After a long absence of more than two decades, Brad Hocker is back at the helm of the Diamond football program, the team he guided from 1998 through 2004. His return marks a rare continuity in a sport where turnover is the norm, and he enters with a clear mission: to rebuild a program that slipped to a 1‑9 record the previous year.
Hocker’s motivation is rooted less in nostalgia than in a desire to change the team’s culture. He stresses the importance of player buy‑in and leadership, pointing to a core group of seniors who have endured a difficult stretch and are now poised to lead by example.
A Fresh Approach to an Old Challenge
The coach has outlined a schedule that begins with a home opener against Buffalo, followed by road trips to Miller and Sarcoxie before a much‑anticipated matchup at Ash Grove on September 25. Each game is seen as a stepping stone toward restoring the program’s early‑2000s competitiveness.
Key to the revival plan are the experienced seniors who will carry the team’s weight. Quarterback/cornerback Giancarlo Martinez is expected to anchor the offense and defense, while versatile athlete Maddox Youngblood will see time at running back and linebacker. Wide receiver/tight end/cover linebacker Kale Adams, transfer center DJ Rawson, and offensive linemen Levi King and Cayle Addington add depth, and Lakota Clark, recruited from wrestling, is slated to start at right tackle.
Hocker emphasizes that the team’s success will hinge on resilience and a willingness to adapt. Rather than resting on past achievements, he is focused on building a forward‑looking identity that can replicate the program’s early‑2000s success without being shackled by it.
