A Weekend of Moments at the Gopher Classic
The Brainerd Legion baseball squad traveled to St. Michael, Minnesota, for the Gopher Classic over July 11‑12, entering four contests that would test both their offense and their pitching depth. The team emerged with a split record, winning two games and dropping two, a result that underscored the competitive nature of the tournament.
The first victory came against Harrisburg, where the Legion posted a 16‑10 win. Michael Hagelie led the offensive onslaught with three hits and two RBIs, while Kashius Caughey added two hits and two RBIs of his own. Gus Lund not only contributed a double but also earned the pitching win, showcasing his versatility on the mound.
A subsequent loss to Buffalo, 9‑5, still offered bright spots. Griffin Bartholmaus collected three hits, and Lund doubled again, driving in a run that kept the game close. Liam Becker’s own double brought in two runs, and Caughey added another double, highlighting the team’s continued ability to generate extra‑base hits even in defeat.
The Legion’s next outing ended in a 9‑0 shutout at the hands of Omaha Westview. Despite the scoreless effort, Michael Hagelie, Jacob Beierman and Rylan Amundson each managed to record hits, demonstrating resilience and the occasional spark against a dominant pitcher.
The final game of the weekend returned to St. Michael‑Albertville, where the Legion rallied for a 12‑9 victory. Tydan Guida and Griffin Bartholmaus each exploded for three hits, while Amundson’s triple added a crucial extra run. Caughey’s double contributed to the offensive surge, sealing a win that capped a weekend of mixed results but undeniable momentum.
