Mizzou women's basketball announced a significant addition to its coaching staff this week, naming NBA veteran Brandon Joyner as its new director of athletic performance. The move signals the program's intent to deepen its approach to player development and physical preparation as it competes in the SEC.
Joyner's career spans more than a decade of high‑level performance work. He spent five years with the Dallas Mavericks, where he progressed to director of G League health and performance and served four seasons as a performance coach. His responsibilities included designing conditioning programs for both NBA and G League athletes.
A Proven Track Record in Player Development
He also contributed a season with the Sacramento Kings before moving to the Cleveland Charge, the G League affiliate of the Cavaliers, where he oversaw strength and conditioning for the team. At Florida State University, Joyner managed training for athletes who later qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, underscoring his ability to prepare competitors for elite competition.
Joyner's earlier stops include a player development internship at Georgia Tech in 2014 and roles at McKendree University and Samford University, where he honed his approach to integrating sport science with on‑court performance.
Head coach Kellie Harper praised the hire, stating that Joyner's proven ability to develop athletes and his history of producing Olympic‑qualifying talent will elevate the Tigers' program. "Brandon brings a level of expertise that aligns perfectly with our ambitions," Harper said in the announcement.
The hiring is expected to bolster the Tigers' training infrastructure and bring a professional approach to the program as they aim for continued growth in the SEC. Joyner will work closely with the coaching staff to design individualized performance plans, monitor injury prevention, and integrate data‑driven insights into daily practice routines.
