Brandon Leavell, a three-star athlete from Madison, Tennessee, announced his commitment to the Tennessee Volunteers on Wednesday, choosing the SEC program over a slate of suitors that included Florida State, Florida, NC State, Purdue and Clemson.
Ranked No. 604 overall and No. 44 among defensive backs in the 247Sports composite, Leavell brings a blend of size and ball skills that caught the eye of recruit analysts early in his junior year at Goodpasture Christian School.
During that season he recorded 35 receptions for 735 yards and 12 touchdowns as a wide receiver, while also adding four interceptions on defense, showcasing his versatility in the secondary.
A Recruiting Ripple Effect
The Volunteers’ defensive backfield will receive a boost from three other signees — Mekhi Williams, Jemari Foreman and Dayon Cooper — who have also pledged to the program, signaling a coordinated effort to rebuild the secondary.
That same class includes a trio of defensive backs already committed to Florida State, underscoring the competitive nature of the recruitment landscape and the significance of Leavell’s choice.
Leavell’s decision reflects a broader trend of top prospects opting for the Vols as the coaching staff continues to make inroads in the Southeast, a shift that could reshape the balance of power in the region’s recruiting battles.
Looking Ahead
The addition of a player who can line up both as a receiver and a defensive back gives Tennessee flexibility in its offensive and defensive schemes, potentially opening new play‑calling options for head coach Josh Heupel.
Fans and analysts alike will watch closely to see how the new secondary meshes with returning starters, and whether the Volunteers can translate this recruiting momentum into on‑field success in the upcoming season.
