Breanna Nine: From Soccer Champion to Neuro ICU Nurse

Balancing athletics, academics, and a mission to brighten hospital stays

At ten years old, Breanna Nine faced a sudden rupture of her appendix that sent her to a hospital bed in Idaho. The experience left an indelible mark, not only on her own recovery but on the way she viewed the people caring for her. Surrounded by nurses and doctors, she felt a spark that would later guide her toward a career in health.

Excelling on the field, she joined the Lewiston Bengals before moving to Piedmont University in Georgia, where she quickly became a key contributor to the soccer program. Her talent helped the team capture the 2022 College Conference of the South Tournament championship, a triumph she recalls with pride alongside her academic achievements.

Balancing a demanding schedule, Nine graduated a year early in 2024 with a nursing degree, a feat that reflected both her athletic discipline and scholarly focus. Her mother, Heather Jansen, a veteran ICU practitioner, has been a constant mentor, reinforcing the values of compassion and resilience that now shape her professional path.

A New Chapter in Care

Today, Nine works in the Neuro Intensive Care Unit at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she applies her clinical skills to some of the most critical cases. In addition to her shift work, she is pursuing further education in anesthetist school, aiming to expand her impact on patient safety and comfort.

Beyond the bedside, she founded Breanna’s Christmas Gift, a charity that delivers presents to children confined to hospital rooms. The initiative, inspired by her own childhood experience, has already brightened the holidays for countless families, turning a personal hardship into a communitywide tradition.

When she isn’t tending to patients or studying, Nine follows the global soccer stage with enthusiasm, recently attending events in Nashville and expressing excitement about seeing Lionel Messi at the World Cup. Her love for the sport remains a reminder of the teamwork and perseverance that have defined her journey.
