Brett Freeman Set to Debut for Tarleton State
Tarleton State head coach Eric Haut announced that Virginia Tech transfer Brett Freeman will join the program for the 2026‑27 season, becoming the 15th scholarship player on the roster and the eleventh newcomer for the upcoming campaign.
Freeman, a 6‑5 guard from the Bronx, New York, prepped at Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he posted a 24.2‑point average as a senior and was a finalist for the North Carolina Mr. Basketball award. He set a school record with 604 points in a season and delivered a career‑high 49‑point performance.
Coach Haut emphasized Freeman’s all‑around skill set, pointing out that the guard can handle the ball, create for teammates and score from anywhere on the floor, qualities that fit the staff’s vision of a versatile backcourt.
Freeman spent the 2025‑26 academic year redshirting at Virginia Tech, using the time to develop under Hokies coach Mike Young. Haut praised the player’s progress and expressed excitement about seeing him contribute immediately when he makes his collegiate debut for the Texans.
The addition marks the latest in a series of transfer‑portal moves for Haut and his staff, who have assembled a deep and talented group ahead of the 2026‑27 season. With Freeman’s arrival, the program looks poised to build on recent momentum and compete more aggressively in its conference.
