Brett Sniffin, a seasoned football coach with more than 30 years in the sport, has been named the new head coach of Durango High School. His appointment comes as the program seeks to curb a recent wave of coaching turnover that has left the team searching for consistency.
Sniffin’s journey in Texas football includes stints at Belton High School, where he compiled a 35‑31 record and guided the team to the playoffs five times, as well as earlier roles at Hudson High School, Lamar Consolidated High School, and Ridge Point High School, the latter of which culminated in a state semifinal appearance in 2015.
Beyond his professional résumé, Sniffin is rooted in a football family; his father was a coach, and he played the game in high school and college before turning to coaching. He is the son of a longtime mentor and the brother of several former players, a background that informs his hands‑on approach.
The new coaching staff will feature longtime line coach Mike Sutter, who joins Sniffin after years of collaboration, and several returning players who have already taken part in open‑weight‑room sessions. Their enthusiasm reflects a collective desire for a stable environment in which to develop.
Sniffin has outlined a philosophy built on structure, discipline, and consistency, aiming to translate the program’s historic success — highlighted by a 2020 3A state championship and a 79 % winning percentage in the 2020s — into a sustainable model for the future.
Off the field, the coach looks forward to embracing Durango’s outdoor culture, planning to hike and fish while integrating the community’s values into the program’s identity.
A Family‑Centered Vision
His wife, Jeanna Sniffin, serves as an elementary school principal in Texas, and their children — Jake, who will serve as defensive coordinator, and Joseph, a recent college graduate — will be part of the program’s extended family.
Looking Forward
With a career record of 110‑53 and a reputation for being both intense and caring, Sniffin enters his new role eager to shape a program that can compete at the highest level while fostering personal growth among its athletes.
