A Builder's Journey to the Hall
Brian Burke, the former general manager of the Anaheim Ducks, has been selected for induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2026, the builder category.
His tenure with the Ducks culminated in the franchise’s first Stanley Cup championship in 2007, a milestone that cemented his reputation as a transformative executive.
Burke’s career in hockey spans multiple roles — from a playing stint to a respected agent, and later to executive vice president of the National Hockey League — showcasing a deep involvement that shaped the modern game.
Beyond the locker room, he founded the You Can Play initiative in memory of his late son Brendan, a campaign that has advanced inclusion for LGBTQ+ athletes and fans alike, earning him the Canadian Forces Medallion for his support of the military community.
The Hall’s Selection Committee formally notified Burke of his nomination, a moment in which he chose to recuse himself from the voting process, underscoring his humility and commitment to the sport’s integrity.
His legacy is further highlighted by the inscription of his name on the Stanley Cup and an Olympic silver medal earned as general manager of the 2010 U.S. team, achievements that reflect both his competitive drive and his diplomatic skill.
Burke also holds memberships in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, the British Columbia Hockey Hall of Fame, and the Providence College Athletic Hall of Fame, underscoring the breadth of his contributions across North America.
The upcoming induction will place him alongside other distinguished builders such as Scott Niedermayer, Chris Pronger, Teemu Selanne, Patrice Bergeron, Carey Price, Pekka Rinne, Keith Tkachuk, Cindy Curley, Mike Gartner, Ron Francis, Henry Samueli, Susan Samueli, Gary Bettman, Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf, J.S.
