Brian Richert, a veteran basketball coach with three decades of experience, has announced his comeback to the sidelines, this time taking the helm of the Watertown High School boys basketball program.
A Coach’s Return
Richert, who retired after 37 years of coaching — most recently at Kettle Moraine — said he is eager to instill a "Dawg mentality" into a team that finished the previous season with a 5‑20 record.
His son, Brennan Richert, will join him as an assistant coach, adding a family tie to the new‑look staff and underscoring the personal investment both father and son have in the program’s success.
The Watertown program, which struggled last year, hopes the expertise of Richert, who guided Kettle Moraine to a 25‑4 season and a WIAA state tournament appearance in 2023‑24, can spark a rapid turnaround.
Richert’s previous stops include a state‑tournament run with St. John’s Northwestern in 2006, a feat that has generated optimism among players, alumni, and local supporters.
While the school’s athletic director could not be reached for comment, the hiring has already sparked discussion on social media, with many praising the decision to bring a proven winner back to the community.
The move underscores a broader trend of experienced coaches returning to high school basketball, seeking to blend tradition with fresh energy as they aim to rebuild programs from the ground up.
