The Briarcrest boys soccer team entered the TSSAA Division II-AA state championship game with a mixture of excitement and historic anticipation. Although the final whistle blew with a 3-1 defeat to McCallie, the match will be remembered as the first time the program has reached the title game.
A Historic Run
McCallie struck early, netting two goals within the opening 21 minutes, but Briarcrest answered back with a goal at the 8:35 mark of the second half, sparking a late push that kept the contest competitive.
Despite being outshot 14-11, the Bruins demonstrated resilience, creating chances and maintaining possession that reflected the progress made under Coach Axel Sandoval, who took pride in the team's overall performance.
Sandoval, speaking after the match, highlighted the significance of the run: "This is a milestone for our program and a foundation for the players who will follow." The victory marks the first state tournament trophy for Sandoval and underscores a rapid turnaround for a team that won just eight games between 2020 and 2023.
The achievement is part of a broader resurgence; Briarcrest has posted three straight double-digit win seasons since Sandoval assumed leadership in 2024, a stark contrast to the lean years prior.
