Brillantes Gives Young Latinas a Platform to Play and Grow

In Milwaukee, a soccer community removes barriers for girls like Ariana Sanchez, offering free play, mentorship and pathways to college.

A field of opportunity

Brillantes, a Milwaukee‑based soccer community, was founded to close the opportunity gap that has long kept many girls from accessing youth sports, especially those from marginalized backgrounds.

The program offers free or low‑cost participation, tailoring each experience to help participants build confidence, self‑esteem and a love for the game.

Among its members is 15‑year‑old Ariana Sanchez, known to teammates as Ary, who joined the organization seeking a space where she could develop her skills without the obstacles she faced on co‑ed teams.

Ary’s mother, Carolina Lomeli, recalls the early days when her daughter often found herself on the sidelines, rarely receiving the ball, and how Brillantes provided a supportive environment that changed that narrative.

Through the program, Ary earned invitations to ID camps and visited a Division I college, experiences that would have been out of reach without the community’s network.

Beyond individual stories, Brillantes creates a cultural bridge, allowing young Latinas to connect with their heritage while competing at a high level.

The organization’s impact extends to other participants such as KB Pallo, Brenda Gonzalez and Derrick Marie, who have each found mentorship and a sense of belonging on the field.

Partnerships with groups like Legacy Sports amplify the reach of the initiative, offering additional resources and pathways for the girls to pursue athletic and academic goals.
